Collin Morikawa already has a PGA Tour win after just over a calendar year as a pro. That came at the 2019 Barracuda Championship last summer. Now, he’s got bigger fish to fry as he seeks another win against a much greater field at the Travelers Championship.

Last week’s T-64th finish at the RBC Heritage wasn’t his best effort, but it still extended his PGA Tour leading cuts made streak to 18. Plus, it’s hard to fault the 23-year-old after he expended plenty of energy contending the week prior at the Charles Schwab Challenge. He was solo runner up after losing in a playoff to Daniel Berger. That was his second runner-up finish after losing by one to Matthew Wolff at the 2019 3M Open.

It’ll be interesting to follow the likes of young guns like Morikawa, Wolff and Viktor Hovland the rest of the year as they’re now seeing courses for the second time.

Morikawa finished T-36th at the 2019 Travelers (68-67-75-68) in his third pro start. Take away a tough Saturday round and he’s right there around the top five.

Ball striking has been the former Cal Golden Bear’s bread and butter. He ranks 32nd in strokes gained off the tee (.41) and third in SG approach (1.098). He was 24th in SG approach at the Travelers last year (2.604 total).

He struggled on the greens at 52nd SG and for this season is 172nd on Tour (-.263). These are things that tend to be tidied up with experience, and a cerebral player like Morikawa should right the ship eventually.
