Patrick Cantlay is finally back after sitting out the first two weeks of the PGA Tour’s resumption. We’ll see if the extra time away pays off against a field where most players are playing for the third straight week.

I’m thinking it will work to Cantlay’s advantage more than not.

The 28-year-old had better course history at Harbour Town last week, but his results at TPC River Highlands are also solid.

While still an amateur playing at UCLA in 2011, Cantlay finished T-21st in the US Open. A week later, Cantlay fired a second-round 60 to take the 36-hole lead at the Travelers Championship en route to finishing T-24th. That was the course record until Jim Furyk’s 58 in 2016.

Cantlay missed his next two cuts at this event, but has regained his form in 2018 and 2019 where he was T-15th in both. His last two sets of scores were 69-68-65-68 and 66-72-65-69 for a combined 18-under.

“…it’s nice to come back to a place where you’ve had success,” Cantlay was quoted by ASAP Sports in 2019. “I definitely feel comfortable around here. It’s one of the only golf courses I think I get on the first tee at the beginning of the day and think I can birdie every hole. That’s what it feels like.”

The Californian has made all four cuts in the 2019-2020 season highlighted by a solo second at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. He was also solo fourth at the Tournament of Champions as well as in the top 20 in his last two events on the West Coast before the pandemic.

Cantlay ranks above average in all strokes gained categories. His ball striking has been his calling card as a pro, though, and it’s reflected in his strokes gained tee to green where he’s sixth on the PGA Tour at 1.676.

He’s also fourth in birdie average (4.65), fourth in par-4 scoring (3.92) and second in greens in regulation (75%).
