Bubba Watson can be an enigma. He’s a big, powerful player who hits the ball everywhere yet still finds a way to post a score. TPC River Highlands doesn’t seem like it’d be a haven for a player like him. He begs to differ.

“Yeah, it’s one of those things where it just fits our eye,” Watson was quoted in 2018 by ASAP Sports. You can see the fairway. You can see the shape of the holes and the greens are always in great shape, so it’s fun.”

Picking Watson in my top 10 falls primarily under the category of horses for course. Not to say Watson isn’t playing decent, golf, but this field is as good as it gets for the Travelers Championship.

Watson won this event three times in 2010 (65-68-67-66), 2015 (62-67-68-67) and 2018 (70-63-67-69). His 17-under total in 2018 ties the lowest winning score since 2011. The former Georgia Bulldog finished second in 2012, fourth in 2013 and T-6th in 2008. He’s made 11 of 12 cuts with only one made cut finishing outside the top 40. That was a T-54 last year.

The 41-year-old has played both events since the PGA Tour resumed its schedule. He contended at the Charles Schwab Challenge where he finished T-7 and just two shots off. Watson made the cut again last week to grab T-52nd.

He’s got three top-10s in 2019-2020 and seeks his first win since the 2018 Travelers.

Watson ranks 11th in strokes gained off the tee (.627), which is no big surprise. A bigger development is with the putter. He ranks 19th (.636) in strokes gained after finishing 167th (.344) in that category a season ago.

Bubba is also ninth in proximity from the rough (37’4”).
