Paul Casey makes his first start this week since the PGA Tour resumed. He comes in well-rested to an event where he’s plenty comfortable.

He may have some scars from coming up shy of a trophy, but he’s been impressive in five starts all since 2015. The Englishman’s finished T-17th or better each time and has four top-fives. He took solo second in 2015 (67-68-64-65) where he lost a playoff to Bubba Watson. Casey was back in the mix with a T-5 three shots back in 2017 (68-68-66-69). He was the 54-hole leader in 2018 (65-67-62-72) before Watson usurped him again and sent Casey to a tie for second place. His Saturday 62 featured 18 greens in regulation.

“It’s open for anybody to play well around here.” Casey was quoted by ASAP Sports in 2018. “It suits all types of games. It’s fun.”

He didn’t contend last year but vaulted up on Sunday for a T-5 (65-68-71-65).

No trophies, but plenty of cash. That’s been the story for much of Casey’s career, though that narrative’s shifted of late.

The 42-year-old went back-to-back at the Valspar Championship in 2018 and 2019. He also won on the European Tour at the Porsche European Open in September.

Casey’s last tournament before the quarantine resulted in solo 11th at the WGC-Mexico Championship. He doesn’t have a top-10 this season on the PGA Tour, but he’s recorded three top-25s and no missed cuts in seven starts.

Casey also posted T-5 at the Australian Open and added a top-20 in the Euro Tour season finale in Dubai.

Top-notch ball striking has been the former Arizona State Sun Devil’s calling card for two decades. He’s 16th on Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.557) and eighth in SG approach (.905). Unfortunately, he’s outside the top 200 in SG putting. He’s had plenty of time at home to work on the flat stick, so we’ll see if that picks up.

If it does, 2020 could be the time Casey breaks through at the Travelers.
