Rocket Mortgage Classic: Top 10 power rankings at Detroit GC
I’m surprised to see Tony Finau sat out this event in 2019. It seems like a good setup for his game.
Finau ranks 38th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.363), but more for his length (305.2 yards, 32nd) than accuracy (55.48%, 186th).
He’ll never turn into Fred Funk striping fairways out there, but he’s bound to at least edge closer to the top 100 in accuracy. When that’s the case, he’s an elite player.
The 30-year-old ranks 14th in approaches from 50-125 yards (16’4”). The big man also has nice touch, as he ranks sixth in SG around the green (.56).
Finau’s famously just got his one career win at the 2016 Puerto Rico Open. He’s got six runner-ups, including one in a playoff at the 2020 Waste Management Phoenix Open.
That was one of five top-15 finishes so far in the 2019-2020 season. He’s played all three weeks since the PGA Tour resumed play in June.
Finau finished T-23rd at Colonial, T-33 at Harbour Town and missed the cut by one at TPC River Highlands.
A couple extra days off could be a blessing in disguise. It gives him more time to prepare for a more favorable upcoming schedule. Detroit Golf Club, Muirfield Village and TPC Twin Cities are all better fits than any he saw in recent weeks.
Finau has missed just two cuts in the last 12 months. He could certainly contend this week even without his ‘A’ game.
