Rocket Mortgage Classic: Top 10 power rankings at Detroit GC
After a Rookie of the Year campaign in 2018-19, Sungjae Im validated the accolades with his maiden win in February at the Honda Classic.
He continued his consistent pace from a season ago by starting 2019-2020 with nine top-25s in 16 starts. Im lost in a playoff at the Sanderson Farms Championship and was third at the Zozo Championship and Arnold Palmer Invitational.
It comes as no surprise that Im has played all three tournaments since the PGA Tour resumed play in June. He made 99 starts worldwide from 2017-2019, so this is nothing new.
The rising South Korean star finished T-10th in his first start back at Colonial. He missed a cut for just the second time since July at the RBC Heritage before bouncing back to play the weekend at the Travelers Championship (T-58th). Im did good work with his short game to keep from posting big numbers last week. That’s a good sign considering he is 104th in SG around the green. Now we need to see the elite ball striking we’re accustomed to.
The 22-year-old is 22nd in strokes gained tee to green (.935) and was 33rd last season (.7).
This is Im’s fourth straight week playing. When he won at the Honda it was his third event in a row and he finished third the next week.
He finished T-21st (69-68-66-72) at the 2019 Rocket Mortgage Classic. He couldn’t quite figure out Detroit Golf Club’s greens, but he was seventh in SG tee to green (1.77) and 12th in SG around the green (.461).
