Patrick Reed played well in the Motor City in 2019. The Texan fired rounds of 68-68-65-70 to finish T-5th.

His style of play isn’t always pretty, but it’s often entertaining from a pure golf perspective. Reed has the ability to make a score regardless of where he ends up off the tee or around the green.

That played out last year at Detroit Golf Club where Reed tied for 54th in driving accuracy (60.71%) but was third in strokes gained approach (1.57). A few more par saves could have nudged him a bit higher up the leaderboard.

I envision Reed being able to better solve these tricky Donald Ross green complexes. He ranks 26th on the PGA Tour in SG around the green (.317) and fourth in SG putting (.961).

The Texan earned his eighth career PGA Tour win in February at the WGC-Mexico Championship. He’s been a lot more consistent in the 2019-20 season. In 11 starts, he has the win, a co-runner-up, an unofficial third at the Hero World Challenge and four more top-25s

Reed’s played all three weeks after tournaments resumed in June. He contended at Colonial where he tied for seventh, missed the cut at the RBC Heritage and tied for 24th last week at the Travelers Championship.

A Sunday 64 vaulted Reed 25 spots at the Travelers.

Reed loves playing on the European Tour, too. He picked up a couple top-10s and was in the top 40 in all four starts overseas late in 2019.

It’s Independence Day weekend, so you know the so-called “Captain America” will be fired up.
