Aside from Rory McIlroy, Tyrrell Hatton has been one of the top performing Europeans of 2020.

The Englishman is known for his wacky antics on the course and his harsh self-critiques, but there’s a reason why the cameras are on him — it’s because he’s contending.

Hatton is a four-time winner on the European Tour and broke through for his first PGA Tour win in February at the Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Prior to the COVID-19 hiatus, the 28-year-old finished 14th or better in all four PGA Tour starts this season.

He picked up where he left off by tying for third a couple weeks ago at the RBC Heritage. That week, he bounced back from an opening 71 to fire the lowest score from Friday-Sunday.

Hatton has been brilliant with the flat stick in 12 measured rounds on the PGA Tour, ranking second in strokes gained putting (1.086). This will be the indicator of future success as he was 145th last year (-.192).

He’s also first in total strokes gained (3.034)

Hatton is not the longest player off the tee, but he can do enough off the tee to play well at most courses. Detroit Golf Club isn’t an ideal fit, but his current form should get him through it.

He did not play this event in 2019.

Hatton will be a popular sleeper pick for the majors coming up this fall and would have been a lock for the 2020 Ryder Cup.

He’s also a popular pick for me this week because he’s fresh. Much of the field has played all three weeks since the return and/or played at the Travelers last week. Hatton’s lone start this summer was at the Heritage.
