Coming to Muirfield Village has been somewhat feast or famine for Justin Thomas. The 27-year-old has made six trips to Jack’s place. They’ve culminated in T-4th finishes in 2017 (67-71-69-72) and T-8th in 2018 (72-69-68-68). The lows include three missed cuts and a T-37th in 2014.

In fairness, one MC was last year in JT’s first appearance back following seven weeks off for a wrist injury.

“This is as close as I get to home. That’s not the reason I play. I play because I love the golf course and I really do feel like I’m going to win this event at some point in my career,” Thomas was quoted by ASAP Sports in 2019. He grew up approximately three hours away in Louisville, Kentucky. “I really do like it. I’ve played it well. I’ve missed two cuts here, but I’ve played it well in other years past.”

It didn’t take long for Thomas to shake off the rust after he left Dublin on that Friday. He won four months later at the BMW Championship in the FedEx Cup Playoffs and then again in the fall this 2019-2020 season at the CJ Cup.

Thomas then picked up his 12th career PGA Tour win in January at the Tournament of Champions. The former University of Alabama product kept it rolling with a T-3rd at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and T-8th at the WGC-Mexico Championship.

Thomas comes to Ohio off of a week of rest. He finished in the top 10 at Colonial and Harbour Town.

JT is one of golf’s more well rounded players, and he’s seventh on Tour in total strokes gained (1.737). His irons are immaculate. He sits at seventh in SG approach (.892) and is fourth in proximity from the fairway (28’2”).

I like him to contend both weeks at Muirfield Village, but a potentially easier setup this week should allow Thomas to attack and play to his strengths even more so.
