Matthew Wolff showed a flare for the dramatic at the 2019 3M Open. He battled to the end with co-runners up, Bryson DeChambeau and playing partner Collin Morikawa, holing a 26-foot winding eagle putt on the par-5 18th for a walk-off victory.

Wolff was a top-ranked amateur at Oklahoma State and had eyes on him right away when he left the Cowboys. It didn’t take long for the then 20-year-old to win on the PGA Tour, doing so in his third pro start.

It earned him his PGA Tour card for the next two seasons and spared him from potentially having to earn his card via Korn Ferry Tour Finals.

“It was — you know, I’m speechless right now. It’s something that, you know, I’ll definitely remember as not only my first win,” Wolff was quoted by TeeScripts in 2019, “but that putt and to do that with all the nerves and trying to get my Tour card was pretty special to me.”

Wolff nearly won his second event this summer at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He held the 54-hole lead and finished solo second only to Bryson DeChambeau, the hottest golfer of the last six weeks.

That venue, Detroit Golf Club, is a favorable comparison to this week’s venue, TPC Twin Cities. Both allow guys to wail it off the tee, which is Wolff’s biggest asset.

He ranks 12th on Tour in strokes gained off the tee for the season (.596 per round) and was third in the field last week at the Memorial (1.146). Ironically, it was Wolff’s iron play that got it done at the 2019 3M Open where he was second in SG approach (2.362).

Since golf’s return, Wolff ‘s been a little hit or miss. He finished T-22nd last week at the Memorial Tournament with rounds of 68 and 70 at a tough test at Muirfield Village.

That’s a good sign.

This is a slightly weaker field at the 3M than last year’s, which was no world beater. His closest rivals last year in DeChambeau and Morikawa aren’t in attendance.

There’s no reason why Wolff can’t win again in the land of the Timberwolves.
