3M Open: Top 10 power rankings
Dustin Johnson won on a short course recently at the Travelers Championship. I envision similar success at a bigger venue where he can let it hang out even more.
DJ is making his 3M Open debut, but he should feel right at home with TPC Twin Cities’ generous fairways. Hopefully they’ll allow him to move on from a surprising pair of 80s and a missed cut at last week’s Memorial Tournament.
Prior to that blip, his only MC since golf returned in June, Johnson won at TPC River Highlands. He did so firing four rounds in the 60s, including a Saturday 61, to win by one. He also earned T-17th at the RBC Heritage in his home state of South Carolina.
The 36-year-old ranks 14th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained (.556 per round) and is second in holes per eagle (63). He’s fourth in proximity from the rough (36’7”) and 13th from the fairway (29’). As long as he avoids the water and sand aplenty, DJ should be just fine.
Three of TPC Twin Cities’ four par-3s play over 200 yards. He’s fourth in proximity from 200-225 (43’3”).
Other high finishes in the 2019-2020 season include T-7th at the Tournament of Champions and T-10th at the Genesis Invitational. Johnson also tacked on a solo second on the European Tour at the Saudi International.
A week like last week could really mess up an elite player. With DJ? I think his relaxed nature will allow him to keep it pushing and bring out his best this week in Minnesota.
