3M Open: Top 10 power rankings
At this point in his career, it’s pretty clear which events Bubba Watson prefers and which he doesn’t.
He’s thrived at places he can curve the ball, like Augusta National, Torrey Pines and Riviera, for example. Tight layouts like the U.S. Open, Harbour Town, etc. aren’t really his jam.
But now we’ve got a rare course the 41-year-old hasn’t seen yet. I think he ought to like TPC Twin Cities.
Watson ranks 13th on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (.568) and is still one of the longest out there (313.1 yards, 6th).
He’s made three of six cuts since the PGA Tour returned to action, including a T-7th at Colonial.
The lefty also looked solid after a slow start last week at the Memorial Tournament. Watson opened in 78 before bouncing back for 68, 70 and 76 to finish T-32nd. Even the 76 wasn’t that bad given the cutthroat conditions.
He was third in SG approach (1.96 per round) and 11th off the tee (.728). His play around the greens was toward the bottom of the pack.
That will definitely need to be cleaned up going forward, but it’s not as important this week as last.
The former Georgia Bulldog played well earlier in the 2019-2020 season with a T-6 at the Farmers Insurance Open, T-3rd at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and T-18th at the WGC-Mexico Championship.
Bubba’s last win came in June 2018 at the Travelers Championship. Something tells me he’s not done yet as he seeks his 13th PGA Tour victory.
