3M Open: Top 10 power rankings
There’s never a dull moment for Brooks Koepka these days. Whether it’s (indirectly) taking Bryson DeChambeau to task on social media, appearing in the ESPN Body Issue, or playing mercurial golf, there’s always something to talk about.
The latest scoop is his knee issues are still lingering from 2019 based on a recent MRI.
“Just wanted to check on it, see where it’s at,” Koepka told the media Saturday in this report from ESPN. “We got the results right after Korea (in October), and then we just wanted to check, and nothing is improved. It’s still the same. So we’ll figure it out when we’re done.”
That’s not great news, and it leaves me wondering why he plans to play four weeks in a row from last week through the PGA Championship.
I’m still willing to give him a shot against a weak field at the 3M Open. We’ve lost faith in him before, only to see more trophies come his way.
The recent world No. 1 did battle to make the cut at the Memorial Tournament last week. He opened with three rounds of 75 or better, which was nothing to sneeze at at Muirfield Village, but a closing 80 dropped him to T-62nd.
The 30-year-old has now made three of four cuts since golf’s return in Junes, including solo seventh at Harbour Town.
Koepka also cashed a paycheck at the 2019 3M Open. He made the cut on the number and finished 65th. The former Florida State Seminole was 18th in the field in strokes gained off the tee (.608).
BK is 23rd in that stat this season (.41).
Seeing the course already should be an advantage against the likes of tournament debutants Tommy Fleetwood, Tony Finau and Paul Casey.
Even a less than 100 percent Koepka can hang around at a bomber’s ball park like TPC Twin Cities. Not to mention, he’ll have brother, Chase, in the field to keep him company.
