3M Open: Top 10 power rankings
Since golf’s return in June, Paul Casey’s flown under the radar a bit.
The 42-year-old Englishman’s played just two of six events, posting a T-32nd at the Travelers Championship and a missed cut at the Memorial Tournament last week.
There were glimmers of hope from Ohio, though. An 8 on a par 3 Friday was a big part in Casey missing the cut by just one. He had one of the better rounds Thursday with a 71 and gained over 3.5 strokes off the tee and approach.
Prior to the COVID-19 hiatus, Casey was chugging along nicely. Starting with his win in September at the European Tour’s Porsche European Open, Casey had eight top-25s in 12 worldwide starts. He wasn’t contending as he’d like, but his game was right there.
The former Arizona State Sun Devil just needs to work on the devil in the details on and around the greens. He’s 195th (-.635) and 209th (-.467), respectively, in those categories this season on the PGA Tour. On the flip side, he’s ninth in both SG off the tee (.652) and approach (.816).
This is a week where his ball striking prowess can outweigh some short game sloppiness. Look for Casey to notch his first PGA Tour top 10 of the season in his 3M Open debut.
