3M Open: Top 10 power rankings
Life came at Tony Finau pretty fast last weekend at the Memorial Tournament. The 30-year-old got out of the gate fast at Muirfield Village, sharing or owning the lead after 18 and 36 holes.
Leading by four on the back nine Saturday, the wheels began to fall off for one of golf’s most powerful hitters.
He got down double digits to eventual champion, Jon Rahm, by Sunday. Nonetheless, Finau grinded it out on the back nine Sunday with three birdies to hang on for a solo eighth finish (66-69-73-78).
It was a step in the right direction for the Utahan who hadn’t fared better than T-23rd in his last six starts. Despite this, Finau isn’t far off as he made his fourth cut in his five starts since golf’s return in June.
He ranked seventh in the field last week in strokes gained off the tee (.834 per round) and is 29th for the season (.385). In 2019-2020, he’s been great around the green (19th SG, .384) but not so much on the greens (96th SG putting, .121). That was opposite last week as he was fifth in SG putting (1.586) and 66th in SG around the green (-.551).
The 30-year-old now finds himself at the 3M Open for the first time, but so do several of the other big names in the field. He’ll enjoy being able to blast driver on most holes, which can surpass 200 miles per hour club head speed as we’ve seen on social media.
At other big ball parks this year, Finau was solo second at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and T-6th at the Farmers Insurance Open.
It’s getting old that Finau has just one PGA Tour win. This could be the weakest field he’ll see for a while, so now’s the time to strike.
