2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational: Top 10 power rankings
Webb Simpson posted his best career finish at TPC Southwind in 2019. The former Wake Forest Demon Deacon finished solo second while chalking up his fourth made cut in six trips to Memphis.
Rounds of 69-66-68-64 were good for a 13-under total. That score would have tied or won seven times in the 2010s, though Brooks Koepka pulled away to win by three in 2019. Webb was also T-3rd at the FedEx-St. Jude Classic in 2014.
His putter has become an asset the past couple years. He was third in the field in strokes gained putting (6.826) and was also fifth in SG approach (5.126).
That’s how he’s been getting it done lately, including in victory at the RBC Heritage last month.
Simpson ranks 17th on Tour in SG putting (.619) and 11th in SG approach (.733). He’s only 105th in driving distance (297.1). That’s refreshing these days compared to the likes of Bryson, Rahm, etc.
Along with Simpson’s win at Hilton Head, the 34-year-old also won at the Waste Management Phoenix Open and was second at the RSM Classic.
Since quarantine ended, Simpson was also T-8th at the Rocket Mortgage Classic. He is coming off a missed cut at the Memorial Tournament. Those early exits few and far between.
That was just his second MC since March 2019.
A win this week would inch Simpson very close to passing Justin Thomas in the world rankings to become the top-ranked player in the U.S. and crack the top three for the first time.
