2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational: Top 10 power rankings
Jon Rahm is playing as world No. 1 for the first time in his career this week. It was nice to hear his candidness at the Memorial Tournament when discussing his clear goal of getting to No. 1 in the Official World Golf Ranking. Most players tend to shrug off the rankings to the media.
It’s clear Rahm, 25, has a fire burning inside. Now it’s time to see how he channels it while on top.
I think the best is still yet to come for Rahm, who is seeking his first major next week at the PGA Championship. For now, I like him to keep his game sharp at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
The Spaniard looked good in his TPC Southwind debut in 2019. Rahm finished solo seventh (62-71-68-69) and tied the tournament’s low round of 62 in round one.
Coming up a shot away from the course record is pretty incredible on your first try.
“The key to all those birdies, my position on the greens was really good,” Rahm was quoted in 2019 by TeeScripts. “I was able to not really go at the pins every single time, but I was able to make myself putts that for the most part I felt with very little break, so at that point I really, if I could do that every day of the year, that would be amazing.”
That kind of formula is replicable for Rahm. His driver (6th strokes gained off the tee, .735) gets him in great position, while his irons are at least going to get him to the fat part of the green.
Plus, Rahm ranks 24th this season both in SG putting (.525) and scrambling (63.82%).
He has often attributed rest as an important factor for his success. After playing five of the first six events since golf resumed in June, he took off last week’s 3M Open to recoup after winning the Memorial.
The former Arizona State Sun Devil put together one of the more dominating performances of 2020, leading by as much as eight on Sunday en route to a five-shot win against an elite field.
Rahm’s won 10 times worldwide since turning pro in 2017. He’s no stranger to the winner’s circle, and I like him to go back-to-back here in Memphis.
