2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational: Top 10 power rankings
It was another top-10 without a win last week at the 3M Open for Tony Finau. At least the scrutiny of winning a six-figure check like this is better than a missed cut, right?
“I had some great looks down the stretch. I didn’t make the putts I needed to,” Finau was quoted by TeeScripts Sunday. “You’ve got to make those putts to win the tournament and I wasn’t able to do it today. But my game’s in a great place with three majors right around the corner, and that’s pretty exciting for me.”
Rounds of 65-66-69-68 resulted in a T-3rd finish three shots behind champion Michael Thompson. Finau’s known for his length, but his irons were sublime early on in Minnesota. He ranked first in the field in strokes gained approach (2.423).
Finau’s 14th in that stat this season (.678). Not to mention he’s 19th and climbing in driving distance (307.6) coming to TPC Southwind where he can hit driver often.
The Utahan was the 54-hole leader a week prior at the Memorial Tournament before settling for T-8th.
In six starts since June, Finau’s made five cuts and added a top-25 at Colonial. Prior to the COVID-19 hiatus, Finau was solo second at the Waste Management Phoenix Open.
Finau comes to TPC Southwind for the third time in as many years. He missed the cut in 2018 and took T-27th (70-71-68-68) at the 2019 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.
Last year’s event was a week after Finau was contending at the Open Championship. I like his chances better now with no time zones to traverse from Minnesota to Memphis.
Finau split with caddie of six years, Greg Bodine, before the Memorial. He had his swing coach Boyd Summerhays on the bag last week. He’ll switch to his brother and former accomplished amateur, Gipper, in Memphis while he continues his search for a full-time looper.
A little brotherly love could be all it takes to get Finau reeling off W’s.
