The case can be made that no one in the world top 10 gets less fanfare than Patrick Cantlay. That’s fair considering he actually is No. 10, but his game is still a bit underrated.

The former UCLA Bruin won’t always dominate the broadcast, but he’s always cashing checks.

Cantlay has played the weekend in each of three starts since June, highlighted by a T-7th at the Workday Charity Open. T-11th at the Travelers Championship and T-32nd at the Memorial Tournament and its elite field are impressive, too.

He’s finished in the top 40 an incredible 15 straight times, the top 50 23 times and is on a made cut streak of 16 times dating over a year. That span includes his last win at the 2019 Memorial as well as solo runner-ups at the BMW Championship and Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.

A Saturday 73 at the 2019 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational put him out of contention in his first time at TPC Southwind. Cantlay still hung in to finish T-12th thanks to accompanying scores of 65, 68 and 68.

His precision was a little off last year. I like that to improve, especially with a wet course. The 28-year-old ranks seventh on the PGA Tour in strokes gained approach (.842) and has been in the top 30 of that category every year he’s been healthy.

He’s not the sexiest pick for this week or next, but Cantlay could definitely iron both TPC Southwind and TPC Harding Park to death.
