Bryson DeChambeau hasn’t had a ton of success in three trips to TPC Southwind. He also wasn’t the same golfer then as he is now.

He’ll look to use his bashing style, ranking him first on the PGA Tour in strokes gained off the tee (1.159), to win his second event in four weeks and seventh of his career.

DeChambeau is a recent winner at the Rocket Mortgage Classic and cumulatively has been the best golfer in the seven weeks since the PGA Tour resumed.

A missed cut at the Memorial Tournament was in large part to a blow-up on one hole where he made a 10 on a par 5. I had empathy for the two poor rules officials who had to deal with him.

That misfortune ended a streak of seven straight top-10s that began prior to the PGA Tour’s hiatus. Solid putting inside 10 feet has been an unsung factor in his play this season.

It’s getting time to put up or shut up as far as the majors go with Bryson when looking ahead to TPC Harding Park. A top 10 in a major still eludes him. This week in Memphis will be a good barometer if he can bring his best against an elite field in tow. That wasn’t the case in his win at Detroit.

A T-48th at the 2019 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational doesn’t pop off the page. DeChambeau did post bookending rounds of 67 and 68, though, so there’s something to build from in 2020.
