2020 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational: Top 10 power rankings
Collin Morikawa has been one of the better stories in golf lately. After winning the 2019 Barracuda Championship despite not having full status on the PGA Tour, Morikawa nearly won again this June at the Charles Schwab Challenge. A short putt missed in a playoff, but he got back on the horse a few weeks later to win the Workday Charity Open at famed Muirfield Village.
The former Cal Golden Bear is up to 10 top-25s in 16 starts in 2019-2020. A missed cut at the Travelers Championship is his only one since turning pro last summer.
He’s carved up the PGA Tour despite seeing a new course every week. That’s the case here again for one of the last times.
We saw Jon Rahm shoot a 62 in his first round at TPC Southwind a year ago, so why can’t Morikawa do something similar?
A pure ball striker can contend almost any week out on Tour, and that’ll be the case here.
Morikawa leads the Tour in strokes gained approach (1.098) and is also accurate with the driver at 42nd in fairways hit (65.67%).
The putter has been his one sore spot. The greens this week should be relatively smooth and fast, which can sometimes help those struggling.
Plus, if the 23-year-old’s in contention, we’ve seen his ability to make clutch putts like the 24-footer that was a must-make to extend a playoff at the Workday with Justin Thomas.
The golf world is eager to see how this young phenom will do in just his second major start in a week from now. This week at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational will offer a nice preview to where his game’s at heading to TPC Harding Park.
