This week, the PGA Tour presents fantasy golf fans with the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. Let’s take a look at this event from a Draftkings perspective.

Before I discuss my fantasy golf player selections let’s take a quick look at the golf course, review a few unique details regarding this event, and discuss the key player statistics that I think are the most vital to a player’s success at this week’s event.

The WGC-St. Jude Invitational was previously a regular tournament on the PGA Tour until last year when it transitioned to the more prestigious World Golf Championship event. I mention this fact as it is important to note a few changes to the tournament format now that the St. Jude Invitational is a WGC event.

First of all, this in no longer a full field event. The field for this week’s tournament will only have 78 players. Additionally, unlike traditional events on the PGA Tour, this week’s WGC event will not have a cut after two rounds. That means that all 78 players will play all four rounds.

The WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational will be played at TPC Southwind in Memphis, Tennessee. This course is a par 70 that measures 7,244 yards. The track features narrow fairways and small green complexes. Additionally, it should be noted that the greens at TPC Southwind are Bermuda grass.

The key statistics that I am looking at this week are: GIR (greens in regulation), strokes gained approach, strokes gained on par fives, par four birdie or better percentage, strokes gained putting, and three putt avoidance.

Here are my player selections for the 2020 WGC-St. Jude FedEx Invitational!

Billy Horschel $8,500

The 2014 FedEx Cup champion has played rather well this season. To be more specific, Horschel has six top 13 finishes on the PGA Tour this season, including a seventh place result at the Workday Charity Open three weeks ago.

Horschel also checks the box for me from a statistical perspective. Billy is currently ranked 27nd in par four birdie percentage (19.97%), 22nd in total strokes gained (1.021), and 25th in strokes gained off the tee (.425) on the PGA Tour this season.

Mr. Horschel’s more recent statistics look even better. In the last eight rounds played on the PGA Tour, in relation to the current listed WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational field, Horschel ranks 10th in total strokes gained, eighth in strokes gained on par fives, third in three putt avoidance, and eighth in strokes gained putting.

It should also be noted that Horschel has traditionally been a much better putter on pure bermuda grass greens. In my opinion, Billy will be thrilled to get back on the greens at TPC Southwind this week!

Daniel Berger $9,600

Berger won this week’s tournament in 2016 and 2017 (before it transitioned to a WGC event). Additionally, Berger has five top nine finishes in his last six events on the PGA Tour, including a win at the Charles Schwab Challenge in June.

Matthew Fitzpatrick $9,000

The current 20th ranked golfer in the official world golf rankings has four top 27 finishes in his last six events on the PGA Tour, including a third place result at the Memorial Tournament two weeks ago. Fitzpatrick also finished fourth at the 2019 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Matthew Wolff $7,900

The 21 year old American has three top 22 finishes in his last four events on the PGA Tour, including a second place result at the Rocket Mortgage Classic earlier this month. Wolff is currently ranked 15th in strokes gained off the tee (.552) on the PGA Tour.

Chez Reavie $6,700

Reavie arrives at this event on the heels of two consecutive top 22 finishes on the PGA Tour, including a 17th place result at the Workday Charity Open earlier this month. He currently ranks sixth in driving accuracy (69.69%) on the PGA Tour. I think Reavie is an outstanding fantasy golf value at a Draftkings price of only $6,700.

Matt Wallace $6,700

The 30 year old Englishman finished fourth at the Memorial Tournament earlier this month. Wallace finished 27th at the 2019 WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational, which was also played at TPC Southwind. It should also be noted that Wallace has four wins on the European Tour.
