Fantasy golf fans can rejoice as the first major of the year has arrived! The 2020 PGA Championship begins this Thursday!

Before I dive into my fantasy golf selections for the 2020 PGA Championship let’s take a look at the golf course and the key player statistics that I feel are the most vital to a golfer’s success this week.

The 2020 PGA Championship will be played at TPC Harding Park in San Francisco, California. The course is a par 70 that measures 7,234 yards. This track features two par five holes that are very long. The par five fourth hole measures 607 yards and the par five tenth measures 562 yards. Clearly, driving distance and accuracy off the tee will be highly important this week.

The key player statistics that I will be focusing on this week are: proximity to the hole, GIR (greens in regulation), driving accuracy, driving distance, strokes gained tee to green, and going for the green percentage.

Here are my Draftkings/fantasy golf player selections for the 2020 PGA Championship!

Justin Thomas $11,300

The 27 year old American has three wins so far this season, including a win last week’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. It should be noted that in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, in relation to this week’s current PGA Championship field, Thomas ranks first in strokes gained tee to green, first in strokes gained on par fours, and seventh in proximity to the hole.

Dustin Johnson $9,000

Yes, I know that Johnson had a bad stretch of golf in July. However, I also know that the major champion seemed to get his golf swing sorted out at last week’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. To be more specific, Johnson shot a final round 67 at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational en route to an eventual 12th place result.

Additionally, in relation to the field, after four rounds of competitive play at last week’s event, Dustin ranked eighth in GIR (greens in regulation-70.8%) and tenth in putts per GIR (1.667).

As far as overall incoming form, well Johnson checks that box for me as well. In ten events played this season, Dustin has five top 25 finishes, including a win at the Travelers Championship in June.

It should be noted that Johnson is one of the most accomplished active golfers on the PGA Tour. Dustin has 21 PGA Tour wins to his name, including a win at the 2016 United States Open.

Collin Morikawa $8,600

Morikawa has two wins on the PGA Tour in the last 13 months, including a win at the Workday Charity Open in July. He currently ranks second in strokes gained approach (1.053) and fourth in strokes gained tee to green (1.507) on the PGA Tour.

Chez Reavie $7,400

In relation to this week’s PGA Championship field of golfers, in the last 12 rounds played on the PGA Tour, Reavie ranks third in strokes gained tee to green, fifth in GIR (greens in regulation), first in bogey avoidance, and sixth in proximity to the hole.

Additionally, Reavie has five top 25 finishes on the PGA Tour this season, including a sixth place result at last week’s WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational.

Matthias Schwab $6,900

The Austrian has two top four finishes on the PGA Tour this season, including a third place result at the Barracuda Championship last week. It should also be noted that Schwab played primarily on the European Tour last season. I reviewed Schwab’s results on the European Tour last year and was quite impressed. Matthias had 11 top 20 finishes on the European Tour in 2019, including a second place result at the Turkish Airlines Open in November.

Michael Thompson $6,600

The 35 year old American has two top eight finishes in his last six events on the PGA Tour, including a win at the 3M Open two weeks ago. It is worth a mention that the last year that Thompson won a PGA Tour event in 2013, he went on to finish 22nd at the 2013 PGA Championship. Thompson highest career finish in a major championship was a second place result at the 2012 United States Open.
