Paul Casey did just about everything asked of him last week at the PGA Championship. If not for upstart Collin Morikawa, the 43-year-old Englishman may have finally earned his first major.

Casey carded rounds of 68-67-68-66 to finish tied for second place and two back of Morikawa at TPC Harding Park. It was his best major finish, besting a T-3rd at the 2010 Open Championship.

“Look, I played phenomenal golf and there’s nothing I would change,” Casey was quoted by ASAP Sports. “I’m very, very happy with how I played. Great attitude. Stayed very calm and stayed in the present. Wasn’t enough. The glorious shots Collin hit like on 16 to make eagle, you have to tip your cap.”

Casey finished T-32nd at the Travelers Championship, missed two cuts and settled for T-67th out of 78 players at the no-cut WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational a couple weeks ago. He mentioned work with coach and former broadcaster, Peter Kostis, got him over the hump and back to playing the steady golf we’re used to.

While last week likely took a lot out of him, he’s coming to a good place to try to keep the momentum going.

In seven Wyndham Championship appearances, Casey’s made six cuts with four top-30s. In his last three starts in 2014, 2015 and 2019, he’s gone T-18th (65-69-68-68), T-3rd (66-66-66-67) and T-13th (65-65-66-69). He was in the mix to win in ‘15 and ‘19.

The former Arizona State Sun Devil ranks 11th in strokes gained off the tee (.59 per round) and third in SG approach (.887). This is elite. Unfortunately, he’s 203rd in SG around the green (-.379) and 199th in SG putting (-.737).

Those weak stats still weren’t great last week, though ranking 18th around the green (.521) and 37th in putting (.226) is all he needs to contend. He was 15th off the tee (.726) and fourth in approach (1.806).

Casey won on the European and PGA Tour in 2019. He’s trending toward his first worldwide win of 2020.
