The PGA Tour restart recap: Who stood out?
By Bill Felber
10. Jon Rahm, -0.05.
9. Rory McIlroy, -0.12
Rahm has made seven starts beginning with the first event, the Schwab Challenge, which was also his only missed cut.
He hit the winner’s circle at the Memorial, shooting a nine-under 279 to beat Ryan Palmer by three strokes. He survived a funky final round to win that week. Leading Palmer and Tony Finau by four entering play Sunday, Rahm closed with an inauspicious 75 but survived when Palmer produced a 74 and Finau shot 78.
Aside from that winning week, Rahm’s best post-restart showing came at the PGA, when he tied for 13th at 273, six strokes behind Colin Morikawa.
Those two tournaments propped up an otherwise indifferent stretch for Rahm. He tied for 33rd at the RBC Heritage, for 37th at the Travelers, for 27th at the Workday, and for 52nd at the WGC FedEx.
McIlroy made six starts, and survived he cut in all six of them. That was the good news. The bad news was that he never really contended in any of the six. McIlroy’s best showing was a tie for 11th at the Travelers, six strokes behind Dustin Johnson.
Aside from that, he managed nothing better than a tie for 32nd at the Memorial and the Schwab. He tied for 33rd at the PGA, for 41st at the RBC Heritage and for 47th at the WGC FedEx.
