While he finished miles away from winner Dustin Johnson, Daniel Berger still beat 122 of his 124 competitors last week at The Northern Trust.

The 27-year-old fired rounds of 66-66-67-67 to finish solo third and a shot back of second.

Berger was third in the field in strokes gained off the tee (.84 per round) and third in SG putting (1.5). His approach play had some room for improvement, but that hasn’t been a problem this season.

It was another stellar outing for Berger, who just keeps appearing at the top of leaderboards. The former Florida State Seminole earned his fourth top-five in six starts since the PGA Tour resumed in June.

These aren’t weak fields he’s beating up on. Berger beat plenty of big names at Colonial and was T-2nd at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. A T-13th at the PGA Championship was solid, too, considering the bunched leaderboard.

What’s Berger doing well? A little bit of everything.

He enters the BMW Championship ranked top 40 on the PGA Tour in all strokes gained categories led by 12th in putting (.651).

Like most parkland courses, there are plenty of bunkers. He’s 22nd in sand saves (57.95%).

This could be another week where going low is necessary to contend. He’s fifth in birdie average (4.55). If fairways turn out to be hard to hit, he’s 10th in proximity from the rough (39’6”).

This week is Berger’s second trip to Olympia Fields. He finished T-2nd in 2012 as a collegian at the Fighting Illini Invitational (70-72-70).
