The way Sam Burns is playing, it’s too bad he wasn’t in the field at last week’s U.S. Open. Not to say he would have dethroned Byrosn DeChambeau, but I think he could have had himself a nice payday.

That’s been the norm for Burns since the restart in June. The 24-year-old from LSU owns six top-32 finishes in his last nine starts. That strong stretch pushed him into the FedEx Cup Playoffs for the first time in his second full season on the PGA Tour.

If he keeps it up, Burns will be in position to climb the world rankings and get into some bigger events. A tournament like the Corales Puntacana Resort & Club Championship is the spot to do that.

Burns has played well in the fall before, finishing T-3rd at the Sanderson Farms Championship, which remains his highest career finish.

He also played well at Corales, taking T-12th (68-74-68-66) in 2019. Burns showed off his length off the tee (308, 4th driving distance) and hit greens and scrambled at over a 70% clip.

Burns is near the bottom of the rankings in driving accuracy, but that’s negated this week at a course with huge fairways and negligible rough.

The Louisianan ranked 30th last season in SG putting (.409).

Burns is off to a good start to the new season with a T-7th at the Safeway Open. I like him to continue his good form and inch his way closer to the top 100 in the world.
