Will Zalatoris did not make the splash he had hoped to make on the PGA Tour this week. That is, until Sunday’s round.

Much was expected of Will Zalatoris this week on the PGA Tour. In fact, someone called him the best player that many people had never heard of.

Zalatoris did not exactly light the world on fire early at this week’s PGA Tour stop, the Corales Puntacana Resort and Club Championship. However, the full-time Korn Ferry Tour pro saved his best for last and made some noise with his Sunday round.

The week started with a 2-under par 70 for Zalatoris on Thursday. He followed that with a 1-under par 71 on Friday to make the cut on the number, at 3-under par.

Saturday, when players like Adam Long and Anirban Lahiri were going low, Zalatoris was steady with a 2-under par 70. He finished Saturday’s round in a tie for 45th place.

Finally, on Sunday, Zalatoris got himself going, and the result was what some were expecting to see from the young talent this week. He also managed to shoot up the leaderboard on the final day in the Dominican Republic.

Zalatoris started his round with pars on both the first and second holes. He got under par with a birdie at the par-4 third hole, then added to his good fortune with a birdie on the par-5 fourth hole.

Pars on the fifth and sixth holes followed, leaving Zalatoris at 2-under. However, he would birdie the par-5 seventh hole and the par-4 eighth to get to 4-under par. That’s where he finished the front nine, shooting a 32.

Zalatoris was steady on the back nine. He parred the 10th, 11th and 12th holes to stay at 4-under on his Sunday round. He was able to record a birdie on the par-4 13th hole to get to 5-under on the day.

He would par the 14th hole before a birdie at the 15th hole got him to 6-under par on the day. Zalatoris parred the 16th and 17th holes before closing his round, and his week, with a birdie on the 18th. That left him with a 7-under par 65, by far his best score of the week and, what turned out to be the best score of the day.

In the process, Zalatoris shot up the leaderboard, moving from 45th into the top 10. He continues to try for a path directly to the PGA Tour and, if he keeps playing like he did on Sunday, that will happen sooner rather than later.
