Sanderson Farms Championship: Scottie Scheffler returns from COVID
By Tim Letcher
One of the big stories at the Sanderson Farms Championship this week will be the return of PGA Tour Rookie of the Year Scottie Scheffler.
Scottie Scheffler had an incredible finish to the 2019-20 PGA Tour season. In the end, he was named PGA Tour Rookie of the Year for his efforts. Now, he’s preparing for the Sanderson Farms Championship this week.
In his last six events of last season, Scheffler was on fire. That stretch started with a T15 at the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational. He followed that with a T4 at the PGA Championship.

In the FedEx Cup playoffs, Scheffler finished T4 at the Northern Trust, then T20 at the BMW Championship. In the Tour Championship, Scheffler made his run before finishing in fifth place. Nonetheless, it was a strong showing for the former University of Texas Longhorn.
Riding a wave of momentum, Scheffler was ready to start the 2020-21 season with a bang. However, he was dealt an unexpected blow that took him off his path.
Prior to the U.S. Open at Winged Foot, Scheffler tested positive for COVID-19. It was a blow to a player who finished as the low amateur in the event in 2017.
After spending time away from the tour, Scheffler is now ready to get his 2020-21 season started this week at the Sanderson Farms Championship. Scheffler will be considered one of the favorites this week in Mississippi.
Scheffler played in 23 events last season and made 18 cuts. In those events, Scheffler had 13 top 25’s and seven top 10s. His best finishes were a pair of third places, one at the Bermuda Championship in November and another at the American Express in January.
It’s important for Scheffler to get off to a good start this season, to prove to himself, and to the tour, that he’s truly one of the game’s bright young stars. In a field like the one this week in Mississippi, Scheffler will be considered among the best players in the event. He needs to take advantage of the opportunity in front of him.
Scheffler can make that emphatic statement this week by winning at the Sanderson Farms Championship. If he’s fully recovered from the symptoms of COVID, look for Scheffler to be at, or near, the top of the leaderboard all week.
