Sanderson Farms: Sergio Garcia trying to end dry spell
By Tim Letcher
It’s been over three years since Sergio Garcia has won on the PGA Tour. But he’s in the mix at this week’s Sanderson Farms Championship.
The 2019-20 PGA Tour season was one that Sergio Garcia would like to forget. But now that the 2020-21 season is underway, Garcia is hoping for better fortune. He’s off to a good start at this week’s Sanderson Farms Championship.
Last season, Garcia made the cut in 10 of the 12 events that he entered, but he didn’t have a great deal of success in those tournaments. Garcia finished inside the top 25 just once and that came when he finished in a tie for fifth at the RBC Heritage.

This season is not off to a great start for the Spaniard, either. He has played in two events so far during the current season. He missed the cut at the Safeway Open, then shot an 81 on the second day at the U.S. Open to miss the cut by a lot.
However, this week has a much different look for the former Masters champion. He opened with a 68 on Thursday, and came back Friday with another solid round of golf.
Garcia started on the back nine and got under par with a birdie on the par-5 11th hole. After three straight pars, Garcia birdied the 15th hole to get to 2-undeer on his round.
However, he gave one back at the 16th with a bogey. He finished his first nine with two pars, shooting a 1-under par 35.
Garcia parred the first and second holes to start his second nine. He then birdied the par-5 third hole to get back to 2-under on his round.
After a par at the fourth hole, Garcia birdied the par-5 fifth hole to get to 3-under. He would par six, seven and eight before closing with a birdie on the ninth hole to close out his round of 4-under par 68.
Through two rounds, Garcia is 8-under par and firmly in the mix this week in Mississippi. When he finished his round, Garcia was just two shots off the lead with 36 holes to play.
Garcia has 10 PGA Tour wins, but none since the 2017 Masters. He’s looking to change that this week in Mississippi, and through two rounds, he has put himself in a position to win. Now, the Sergio of old needs to show up on Saturday and Sunday to close this event out.
