Bombs away! Long-hitting threesome ready for Shriners
By Tim Letcher
Bryson DeChambeau, Cameron Champ and Matthew Wolff will play together in the first two round of the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
The folks who made the pairings for this week’s Shriners Hospitals for Children Open probably didn’t need to do something to draw more attention to their PGA Tour event this week. After all, they’ve got the first start by Bryson DeChambeau since he won the U.S. Open. And they’ve got a very solid field of players that should draw quite a bit of attention.
But those folks wanted to tease golf fans just a little more. So, when they made the pairings, they decided to put together a threesome that all golf fans will be watching on Thursday and Friday.

Playing together at TPC Summerlin in the first two rounds will be DeChambeau, Cameron Champ and Matthew Wolff. For those who are not aware, those are three of the longest hitters, if not THE three longest hitters, on tour.
In 2019, Champ led the PGA Tour in driving distance. Last season, it was DeChambeau leading in that category. And, thinking back to the U.S. Open at Winged Foot, there were occasions where Wolff outdrove DeChambeau, sometimes by more than a little.
The power and the distance in this threesome will be fun to watch. Just look at the numbers.
In driving distance during the 2020 season, DeChambeau led the tour in driving distance (322.1 yards). Champ was second (322.0) while Wolff was ninth (311.6).
How about measured drives? DeChambeau was over 320 yards 56.6 percent of the time, which led the tour. Champ was second, with 52.1 percent of his drives 320 yards or more. Wolff was 11th, with 34.9 percent of his drives covering 320 yards or more.
You want clubhead speed? This group has clubhead speed. For the top clubhead speed, DeChambeau led the tour last year with a 137.1 mph mark. Champ was sixth, with a 132.0 mph clubhead speed. Wolff was 18th with a 127.3 mph top speed. For average clubhead speed, Champ led the tour with a 127.0 mph average. DeChambeau was fourth at 125.0 mph, while Wolff was 12th at 121.3.
The bottom line is that these three players will enjoy taking out drivers and crunching them this week in Las Vegas. And the fans will get a treat by having all three of them in the same group, trying to outdrive each other on every hole.
