Shriners Hospitals for Children Open: winners and losers from Las Vegas
By Tim Letcher
Find out which players were winners and which were losers at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open, including Martin Laird and Patrick Cantlay.
Each week on the PGA Tour, there are those who have good weeks and those who do not. We like to call them winners and losers and each week at Pro Golf Now, we take a look at who had a big week and who didn’t. Find out who this week’s winners and losers were at the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open.
Winners
Martin Laird – The 37-year-old Laird earned his fourth PGA Tour win overall and his first since 2013 by sinking a birdie on the second playoff hole on Sunday. For Laird, it was his first finish inside the top two since 2016 and first inside the top three since 2017.

Matthew Wolff – While his first two days at the Shriners were not great, Wolff vaulted into contention on Saturday with a 61. Then on Sunday, his 66 got him into the playoff. He came up just short, but the 21-year-old continues to show that he’s got the game to be in the mix in any event he enters.
Austin Cook – For just the second time in his career, which encompasses 85 starts, Cook finished in the top three in an event. The only other time he did was his only career win, in the 2018 RSM Classic. This is the type of finish that could jump start the season for Cook.
Will Zalatoris – For a player who doesn’t have current tour status, Zalatoris keeps putting up really impressive results. His T5 this week is just another example that this young player is someone who is going to be on the tour for a long time to come.
Abraham Ancer – A consistent week for Ancer ended with a solo fourth-place finish. Rounds of 66, 66, 65 and 67 left him at 20-under par and three shots out of the playoff. At some point, Ancer will get that first PGA Tour win. And it will probably be sooner rather than later.
Losers
Patrick Cantlay – Sure, Cantlay finished in a tie for eighth this week, which is good. But examine that a little closer. He was one of the favorites this week and he had a share of the lead with 18 holes to play. Then, he shot a 73 in the final round and was never in contention. Not a good result for someone who was expected to win, or come close to winning, this week.
Collin Morikawa – The 2020 PGA Champion didn’t play awful this week in Las Vegas, but his 69-67, for a 6-under par, was one shot short of making the cut. Morikawa went into the Shriners as one of the favorites, so missing the cut is a bit of a disappointment.
Rickie Fowler – Thursday was a good day for Fowler, as he shot a 4-under par 67. But Friday was very different, as Fowler carded a 74. That left him at 1-under par and nowhere near the cut. Fowler needs something positive to happen, and soon.
Hideki Matsuyama – Another player who was among the favorites this week, Matsuyama also missed the cut. He shot 68 on Thursday and 69 on Friday to miss the cut by two shots. For a player with so much talent, there’s hardly a reason that Matsuyama should miss the cut in an event like this one.
Jason Day – The Australian had a nice finish to the 2019-20 season, but this was not his week in Las Vegas. Day shot 68-72, for a 2-under par score. He missed the cut by five shots and fell to 131st in the early FedEx Cup standings.
