Dustin Johnson, the world’s top-ranked golfer will miss this week’s PGA Tour event, the CJ Cup, after testing positive for COVID-19.

Dustin Johnson was set to be one of the favorites, if not THE favorite, this week at the CJ Cup at Shadow Creek. Instead, DJ will miss the event after testing positive for COVID-19 on Tuesday.

Johnson, who won his first FedEx Cup earlier this season, was set to return to the tour for the first time since finishing T6 at the U.S. Open last month. His return date is now unknown.

DJ experienced symptoms of COVID-19 and was given a test by PGA Tour officials. The test came back positive, forcing Johnson to withdraw from this week’s event.

“Obviously, I am very disappointed,” Johnson said in a statement to PGATour.com. “I was really looking forward to competing this week but will do everything I can to return as quickly as possible. I have already had a few calls with the TOUR’s medical team and appreciate all the support and guidance they have given me.”

Johnson is number one in the Official World Golf Rankings and was set to compete this week at Shadow Creek, along with a stellar field that includes a number of the top golfers in the world. Among those in the field are Rory McIlroy, Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas.

DJ will go through a period of quarantine, as mandated by CDC guidelines. After that period, he can test again and, if negative, will be allowed to return to action on the PGA Tour.

The tour is at Sherwood Country Club next weekend for the Zozo Championship, an event where DJ was expected to play. His status for next week is still up in the air.

Johnson will hope to be fully healthy in time to play at the Masters next month. He should be healthy by that point and will be seen as one of the favorites.

Whether this is a minor setback for DJ or something that he will have to contend with for a while remains to be seen. All we know at this point is that Johnson will not be playing at the CJ Cup this week.
