CJ Cup: how Sung Kang made an 11 on a par four on Saturday
By Tim Letcher
Sung Kang had a bad hole on Saturday at the CJ Cup. A really bad hole. Find out how he made an 11 on a par four in the third round.
Poor Sung Kang. I don’t mean to pick on him, but he has had a disastrous start to the 2020-21 PGA Tour season. That continued on Saturday at the CJ Cup.
Just two weeks ago, I wrote about how Kang struggled in Mississippi, shooting a 79 and the Sanderson Farms Championship. That was after he carded an 86 (yes, 86) in the second round of the U.S. Open at Winged Foot.

Unfortunately for Kang, that trend continued on Saturday. And it included one of the worst scores on the PGA Tour in a while on a single hole.
Kang’s round started on the back nine with bogeys on the 10th and 11th holes. However, he bounced back with birdies on the 12th and 13th holes to fight his way back to even par.
Kang would par the 14th hole to stay even on his round. He slipped back over par with a bogey on the par-4 15th hole.
After a par on 16, Kang would bogey the 17th hole and the par-5 18th. That left him with a 39 on his first nine holes.
But the real fun, or in Kang’s case not so much fun, came after he made the turn.
Kang parred the first hole, his 10th of the day, to stay 3-over on his round. But that’s the last he would see of anything close to par on his day.
The 11th hole was, without mincing words, a disaster for Kang. His tee shot hit a tree and went only 81 yards, landing in the native area. From there, he advanced the ball 44 yards, but his ball landed out of bounds.
After a penalty, Kang’s fourth shot went 19 feet. Total. His fifth shot went 15 feet. Total. His sixth shot went 197 yards but landed out of bounds. Again.
After another penalty, Kang hit his eighth shot into the fairway. His ninth shot got him to the green and he two-putted for an 11. That’s right, an 11.
Kang would bogey the fifth hole and actually birdied the seventh hole on his way to an 82. Not a bad round, considering that he was seven over par on one hole.
For Kang, the disaster that is his 2020-21 season continues. He’s in need of a turnaround in the worst way.
