Tiger Woods will be defending his title this week at the Zozo Championship on a course where he has had tremendous amounts of success.

Tiger Woods has had great success on many courses during his incredible career on the PGA Tour. Among those courses would be Sherwood Country Club, the site of this week’s Zozo Championship.

Woods actually won the Zozo Championship last season, but the tournament was held in Japan. So, like Justin Thomas last week, Woods is defending his title not only on a different course, but also on a different continent.

At last year’s Zozo, Woods got his 82nd career win, tying Sam Snead for the most in the history of the PGA Tour. Now, Woods appears to have a very real opportunity for an 83rd career win, one that would break the tie with Snead.

That’s because, due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the Zozo Championship was moved from Japan to Sherwood Country Club in Thousand Oaks, California, a course that Woods knows very, very well. And it’s a place where he has had great success.

From 2000-13, Woods hosted his charity golf event, the Hero World Challenge, at Sherwood. That event pits 18 of the world’s top golfers against one another in an event that raises money for the Tiger Woods Foundation.

While the event has a limited field, those who play are generally 18 of the best players in the world. To qualify, players must be the winner of one of the most recent four major championships, be in the top 11 of the Official World Golf Rankings, be the defending champion or receive one of two exemptions from the Woods foundation.

Facing the world’s best, Woods was, well, typical Tiger.

He won the event five of the 14 times it was played at Sherwood. Four times, he won by more than a shot, including a seven-shot win in 2007 and a four-shot victory in 2006. He was second four other times.

All of that is to say that, simply, Tiger loves Sherwood. The Zozo being held at this course gives Woods a distinct advantage this week.

Having said that, Woods has not played since the U.S. Open at Winged Foot, where he shot 73-77 and missed the cut. No one really knows what kind of shape Woods’ game is in at this point. Plus, he’s 44 years old now, not in his early 30s like he was when he dominated at Sherwood before.

If Woods has his game where he wants it, this could be the week he takes over the all-time wins lead on tour. Sherwood would be an appropriate venue for Woods to win his 83rd tournament, with his history of success there.
