Rory McIlroy had a wild round on Thursday at the Zozo Championship, one that included seven birdies, two double bogeys and one snapped club.
Rory McIlroy had an incredible day at the Zozo Championship on Thursday at Sherwood Country Club. There was so much going on in the former world number one’s round that it’s hard to break it all down.
And speaking of breaking, there was a broken club in the round. We will get to that.

McIlroy started his day solidly. He parred the first hole, then birdied the par-5 second hole to get under par on his round. He would bogey the par-3 third hole to slip back to even par.
After a par on the fourth hole, McIlroy birdied the par-5 fifth hole to get back into red figures. He would par six, birdie seven, par eight and birdie nine to finish his front nine with a 3-under par 33.
That’s when the fun, or not so fun in McIlroy’s case, really got started.
McIlroy would bogey the par-4 10th hole. He then got into trouble on the par-5 11th hole, spending three shots in the rough and eventually recording a bogey. He was 1-over at that point in his round.
After a par on the 12th hole, McIlroy birdied the par-5 13th hole to get back to 2-under. But he couldn’t carry the momentum over, as he bogeyed the par-4 14th hole.
Then on the par-3 15th hole, McIlroy hit his tee ball into the water. After a drop, his third shot landed about 18 feet from the hole. He missed his bogey putt and took a double, dropping from 1-under par to 1-over par.
McIlroy bounced back on 16, recording another birdie on a par five. Then on 17, he rolled in a 15-foot birdie putt to get back into red figures.
But on 18, McIlroy had an adventure. His tee shot went way right and he was forced to pitch back into the fairway. With his third shot from 140 yards out, McIlroy pushed his shot into the right rough. As he started to walk toward the hole, he intentionally leaned down onto his club and snapped the shaft. He went ahead and broke the club into two pieces as he walked down the fairway.
McIlroy went on to double bogey the hole, finishing with a 1-over par round of 73. It was a wild round that included seven birdies, five pars, four bogeys and two doubles. But the only thing most will remember is McIlroy’s club snap on the 18th hole.
