Zozo Championship: winners and losers from California
By Tim Letcher
Find out who the winners and losers were at this week’s Zozo Championship, including Patrick Cantlay, Justin Thomas, Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson.
At each week’s stop on the PGA Tour, there are players who do good things and those who do not so good things. Here at Pro Golf Now, we call them winners and losers. Find out which players fit into these categories for this week’s tour stop, the Zozo Championship.
Winners
Patrick Cantlay – The Californian earned his third PGA Tour win by claiming the title at the Zozo Championship. A final round 65 helped Cantlay jump from fourth into the lead. Outdueling Jon Rahm and Justin Thomas down the stretch should boost his confidence moving forward.

Jon Rahm – The 25-year-old Rahm continues to contend regularly on the PGA Tour. He got into contention with a 9-under par 63 on Saturday and his 68 on Sunday left him one shot shy of Cantlay. It won’t be long until Rahm wins again on tour.
Justin Thomas – Held the 54-hole lead but was unable to close it out on Sunday. Still, Thomas, like Rahm, seems to be in contention every time he plays. At just 27 years of age, Thomas is clearly one of the top five players in the world and likely will be for a long time.
Russell Henley – The strong start to the 2020-21 season continues for Henley. He tied for fourth this week, adding that to his tie for third last week. Henley is off to a very strong start and is in the top 20 in the FedEx Cup standings early in the season.
Bubba Watson – Like Henley, Watson has started well this season. He tied for 31st at the U.S. Open and tied for seventh at the CJ Cup last week. This week, Bubba tied for fourth, another strong showing for the two-time Masters champion. He seems to be primed and ready for another run at a green jacket.
Losers
Tiger Woods – Playing at a course where he has won five times, Woods simply did not have it this week at Sherwood Country Club. Tiger opened with a 76 on Thursday, then shot a 66 on Friday. He was back with a 71 on Saturday, then shot 74 on Sunday. Altogether, Tiger finished 72nd out of 77 players in his (likely) only prep before next month’s Masters.
Phil Mickelson – Lefty was all over the map this week in one of the most Mickelson-like weeks ever. He had a wild round Thursday, went 2-9-3-2 at one point on Friday, made nine birdies on Saturday and was able to finish on Sunday. But his 76th place finish was less than ideal.
Richy Werenski – When a player shoots an 11-under round at a PGA Tour event, said player will usually find himself in contention. Not so for Werenski this week. His Friday 61 was sandwiched between a 72 on Thursday, a 72 on Saturday and a 76 on Sunday. That’s completely wasting a great round.
Matthew Wolff – After consecutive runner-up finishes to start the 2020-21 season, Wolff has now had two bad weeks in a row. He was 73rd last week at the CJ Cup and he backed that up with a 50th-place finish this week at the Zozo. Time for the 21-year-old to regroup.
Tommy Fleetwood – The bad times continue for Fleetwood. He missed the cut at the U.S. Open, then was 59th last week at the CJ Cup. This week, he had a bad Sunday and ended in a tie for 57th place. This is a tough stretch for a player ranked 18th in the world.
