Attempting to make the cut on Friday at the Bermuda Championship, Harold Varner III instead went in the other direction, leaving him home for the weekend.

Harold Varner III was considered one of the favorites heading into this week’s Bermuda Championship. And after a 2-under par 69 on Thursday, Varner was not among the leaders but was certainly not out of contention at this week’s stop on the PGA Tour.

However, Varner took himself out of contention on Friday, as he struggled his way around Port Royal. It was most certainly not the round that he hoped to have.

The bad round started right away for HV-III. Playing the back nine first, he bogeyed the 10th hole after not being able to get up-and-down from the fringe.

From there, Varner would par the next three holes, remaining at 1-over on his round. But the downhill slide was just about to start.

On the par-4 14th hole, Varner hit his tee shot into the rough. His second shot went into the water and he took a penalty. He fourth, from the rough, advanced but he stayed in the rough. His fifth shot got him on the green, where he needed two putts to get down. That resulted in a triple bogey, and Varner dropped to 4-over par.

The negative trend continued on the par-4 15th hole. His tee shot landed in the rough, and his second shot left him in the rough as well. His third got him back into the fairway and his fourth got him to the fringe. Again, he needed two shots to get down, resulting in a double bogey. That was five shots over par in two holes for Varner.

While he didn’t have any other disastrous holes in this round, Varner’s struggles continued.

He parred the final three holes of his first nine to shoot a 6-over par 41. At that point, he needed a huge rally on his second nine just to make the cut.

Varner parred the first two holes on his second nine. However, he ran into trouble on the par-3 third hole. He hit the green with his tee shot, but needed three putts to get in. That resulted in another bogey.

From there, Varner would par the next four holes before finishing with back-to-back bogeys to close his round. It all added up to a round of 9-over par 80, leaving Varner well outside the cut line.

For a guy who was expected to contend this week in Bermuda, Friday’s round was a disappointing one. Varner will need to learn from this as his season moves forward.
