Bermuda Championship: Fred Funk closes historic week
By Tim Letcher
Fred Funk had a goal of playing with his son Taylor this week at the Bermuda Championship. Instead, he ended up making PGA Tour history.
Fred Funk had an incredibly special week this week at the Bermuda Championship. Funk got to play with his son Taylor in the first two rounds which had to be a very proud dad moment for Fred.
As if that was not special enough, Funk decided to make a little history this week at Port Royal. The 64-year-old Funk shot a 2-under par 69 in Thursday’s first round and put himself in position to make the cut on Friday.

Funk had double bogeyed the sixth hole, his 15th of the day, to put himself in a terrible spot coming down the stretch. But he was able to birdie the par-5 seventh hole and was 2-over on his round at the time.
Funk came to his 18th hole with a chance, despite still sitting at 2-over on his round at the time. It appeared that even par would make the cut at that time. That meant that Funk needed a par to play the weekend.
He did one better than that. Funk would chip in for birdie, leaving him with a round of 72 and, as it turns out, well inside the cut line, which ended up being a 1-over par.
Why is any of this significant? Well, it turns out that just by making the cut, Funk joined some very elite company.
Making the cut on the PGA Tour at 64 years of age or over is not something that’s done very often. In fact, by doing so this week, Funk became the first player to pull the trick since Tom Watson did so at age 65 during the 2015 RBC Heritage.
Funk joined an amazing list of players who have made the cut in a PGA Tour event at 64 years of age or older. That list is: Watson, Jack Nicklaus and Sam Snead. And now Funk.
A nine-time winner on the PGA Tour Champions, Funk has not won on the PGA Tour itself since 2007. That year, he earned his eighth tour win by claiming the Mayakoba Golf Classic victory.
Funk’s biggest win on tour came when he won the Players Championship in 2005. But even that does not compare to the history that Funk made this week in Bermuda, where he joined an incredibly elite group of old guys who have made the cut on the PGA Tour.
He finished in a tie for 59th this week in Bermuda, but that’s not the point. Making the cut at age 64 was the historic feat that Funk was able to accomplish, placing him in some very elite company.
