He would par the 11th and 12th holes before running into trouble on the 13th. There, Murray drove it in the rough, and hit his second shot to a different patch of rough. Still, he was within about 75 feet of the hole in two. However, it took him five shots, including three chips, to get in with a triple-bogey seven.
Murray would par the 14th hole before he had an adventure at the 15th. On the par three, Murray needed not one, not two, not three, not four but five chips to get on the green. He then two putted for a snowman, an eight, on a par three. It was a brutal hole for him and left him at 9-over par through six holes.
He would bogey the 16th and the 17th to drop to 11-over par. He was able to par the 18th hole to close his first nine with an 11-over par 46.
Murray’s problems continued as he made the turn. On the par-4 first hole, his drive landed in the fairway but his second shot went into a greenside bunker. He blasted out from there but flew the green, leaving himself a difficult third shot. He advanced the ball a bit with his third before hitting the green with his fourth. Two putts got him in with a double-bogey six, leaving him at 13-over par.
To Murray’s credit, he did not give up on the round. He parred the second hole, then birdied the par-5 third hole to get back to 12-over par. However, he gave that shot right back with a bogey on the fourth.
Murray closed his round with three pars, a bogeys on the eighth and ninth holes. That left him with a 15-over par 85 on the day.
It’s a day that Murray will not forget. For all the wrong reasons.
