2020 Masters: Top 10 power rankings at Augusta National
Both by world ranking and the opinion of most in the golf world, Jon Rahm is the best player right now without a major.By age 25, the uber-talented Spaniard has six European Tour wins, five PGA Tour wins and a Ryder Cup appearance. It would’ve been two appearances if the Ryder Cup wasn’t postponed until 2021.
It’s not to say Rahm doesn’t show up to the majors, either. In 16 starts, he owns four top-10s highlighted by T-3rd last year at the U.S. Open. He’s made six of his last seven cuts, all of which resulted in T-23rd or better.
Rahmbo has made good money at the Masters. He’s 3-for-3 making the cut with T-27th (73-70-73-75) in 2017, fourth (75-68-65-69) in 2018 and T-9th (69-70-71-68) in 2019.
If he can keep his emotions under control and stick to his game plan, he appears poised to don a green jacket one of these years.
“Even Tiger, when he shot 18‑under in 1997, he made mistakes. You know, he missed greens,” Rahm was transcribed by ASAP Sports prior to the 2019 Masters. “He missed putts. He missed fairways like everybody else. So just knowing that everybody is going to make mistakes and almost everybody is going to three‑putt and everybody is going to miss a green and have a tough up‑and‑down. It’s just going to happen to all of us. You just need to minimize those mistakes and be smart and think your way through Augusta.”
Rahm comes to Augusta National in great form. He contended in his last start at the Zozo Championship where he finished T-2nd. He was overcome by a stellar final round by Patrick Cantlay. That was part of his current streak of seven straight top-25s, which includes a win in the FedEx Cup Playoffs at the BMW Championship.
Prowess off the tee is rewarded at the Masters, and hitting tons of fairways is not an end-all-be-all. Early in the 2020-21 season, Rahm is third in SG off the tee (1.138) and was fourth (.756) last season.
He was in the top 50 in approach proximity from 175-200 yards and 200-plus, as well as inside 100 yards.
Not to mention Rahm was 22nd in SG putting (.479) and 24th around the green (.304). His polished game is what allowed him to rank second in scoring average (69.127).
