The Masters: five old guys who could make the cut
By Tim Letcher
3. Larry Mize
Believe it or not, Larry Mize only won four times on the PGA Tour during his career. It just so happens that one of those wins came in one of the most memorable finishes in Masters history.
Mize went into a sudden death playoff, facing two of the world’s best players in 1987. Seve Ballesteros and Greg Norman were intimidating by nature, but Mize stood up to both of them. And when he made a miracle chip-in on the 11th hole, the second playoff hole, to beat Norman, the world was stunned.
He contended again on two more occasions, trying to earn a green jacket. In 1992, Mize finished in a tie for sixth place. And in 1994, he was third. Those two, along with his 1987 win, were his only top 10s in the Masters.
Mize, who is actually from Augusta, Georgia, has played in the Masters 35 times, making the cut 20 times. However, he has missed the cut the last two years, after making the cut three of the previous four years.
Now age 62, Mize doesn’t have a lot of game left, but it would not be surprise to see him make one more cut at Augusta National.
