The Masters: top 10 past champions who could win again in 2020
By Tim Letcher
No. 9 Bernhard Langer (winner in 1985, 1993)
Yes, he’s a long shot. A very long shot. But at age 63, wouldn’t it be a great story if Bernhard Langer was in the hunt at the 2020 Masters? It would be 35 years since his first triumph at Augusta National, a period of time during which many of this week’s contenders were born.
It was 2009 when 60-something Tom Watson nearly won the Open Championship, so anything is possible. Especially in 2020.
Langer has made the cut in three of the last four Masters. He tied for 62nd last year, tied for 38th in 2018 and tied for 24th in 2016. Going back just a bit further, Langer tied for eighth, when he was 56 years old.
The problem for Langer this year will be length. He’ll be competing against players who simply blow it by him off the tee. However, Langer has always been known for his accuracy. If he can keep the ball in the fairway and get his putter going, anything can happen.
Honestly, the best case scenario for Langer would be if the weather turns bad this week. Not necessarily wet, because that will only hurt his length issue. But if the wind starts to blow, it could adversely affect others in the field and give Langer an outside chance.
