2020 RSM Classic: Top 10 power rankings at Sea Island
Sungjae Im wasn’t his usual self since golf resumed in June. We got to see the Sungjae of old last week when he posted his best major finish of seven appearances at the Masters, taking T-2nd.
Rounds of 66-70-68-69 got him to 15-under, a total that would have won the event nine times and gotten into a playoff the other every year since 2010. Instead, Im and Cameron Smith settled behind Dustin Johnson’s record 20-under.
Im went for broke Sunday and was impressive recovering from all over at the Masters. He won’t need the same type of shot maling to get it around Sea Island, but a good short game still helps at Sea Island.
The RSM Classic was a rare tournament he skipped last season. Im came here as a rookie in 2018 and earned T-37th (68-69-68-67) despite four rounds in the 60s.
Im plays well in the southeastern U.S. on Bermuda grass. He broke through for his first PGA Tour win in March at the Honda Classic. He also finished third at the last two Arnold Palmer Invitationals.
The 22-year-old South Korean has made his last five cuts, which includes his previous high finish in a major, 22nd at the U.S. Open.
Early on this season, Im ranks 25th in strokes gained off the tee (.582). He was 20th in that stat (.437) in 2019-2020. He’s 225th in SG around the green (-.368), but there was no Shotlink data at the Masters, so he doesn’t get credit for his short game wizardry that was on display last week.
