Matthew Fitzpatrick didn’t have his best stuff last week at Augusta National, but he did grind out his fifth straight top-50. He played pretty well after a shaky 74 to start, grinding out a 70 to make the cut on the number. He then turned in a 73 and 72 to finish at T-46th.

Fitzy was a solid dark horse candidate going into last week. He brought in solid form of a T-7th at the BMW PGA Championship, T-12th at the CJ Cup and T-26th at the Zozo Championship. Unfortunately, Augusta National was a bit too long and soft for more of a precision player like him.

Perhaps a firmer links style set of courses like Sea Island will be more up his alley. Despite this being Fitzpatrick’s RSM Classic debut, I think he’ll contend right away.

The 26-year-old Englishman ranked second on the PGA Tour in strokes gained putting (.88) last season. That’s set up by his accuracy off the tee (38th, 64.58%).

Fitzpatrick has four wins on the European Tour. He’s looking to break through for the first time in the U.S./PGA Tour. He came close this summer taking solo third against a stacked field at the Memorial Tournament. Fitzpatrick also played well on Bermuda when he took solo second at the 2019 Arnold Palmer Invitational.

Fitzpatrick likely won’t return to this event in future years when the Race to Dubai Final Series is back up and running, but this tournament and venue set up well for his style of play.
