Tyrrell Hatton’s boom or bust nature at the majors turned sour last week at the Masters. The fiery Englishman spun his wheels at Augusta National where he missed the cut by three.

It was a blip in what’s otherwise been a stellar run of golf this fall. The 29 year old ranked fourth on the PGA Tour last season in strokes gained approach (.694). Stuffing iron shots is a big reason why he was second in birdie average (4.55).

That will be a nice tool for Hatton as he makes his RSM Classic debut on a second shot set of courses like Sea Island. He was also top 50 in strokes gained around the green and SG putting.

Hatton played well on Bermuda greens this summer when he contended at the RBC Heritage (T-3rd). That was also the surface he putted on in his maiden PGA Tour win in March at the Arnold Palmer Invitational. Hatton was a respectable 15th in SG putting (.839) on the week at Bay Hill.

Hatton previously had a streak of four straight top-30s and seven in his last eight starts. That included a win at the European Tour’s BMW PGA Championship. It also listed a T-3rd at the CJ Cup and a T-7th at the Houston Open.

This is his sixth event in the last seven weeks, so perhaps those two extra days off to prepare for the RSM Classic has recalibrated Hatton for what could be his last start before a winter break.
