Masters of the Majors for the 2020 Season
By Bill Felber
9. Paul Casey, -0.68
The odd thing is that the one Major Championship Casey actually led in 2020 turned out to be his worst performance of the Major season.
That season began auspiciously enough when Casey shot 68-67-135 to position himself in the lead pack with Jason Day (134), Dustin Johnson (136) and several other of the Tour’s lead ponies. Until Morikawa dropped that nuclear eagle on the field on the 16th hole Sunday, Casey was in position to win. He eventually finished ina tie with Dustin Johnson for second, two strokes behind. It was the best showing in a Major event of his lengthy career. Dominance rating: -1.92.
At Winged Foot, Casey was never a factor, thanks largely to a first round 76. He saved himself from the cutline with Friday-Saturday rounds of 70-69, but managed nothing more profound than a tie for 17th, an anonymous 14 strokes behind the winner. Dominance rating: -0.60.
Casey announced his presence at the Masters with a first round 65, good enough for a three-way tie for first with Johnson and Dylan Fritelli. Alas, fame is fleeting. In the second round Casey sloshed his way to a 74, making contention merely a fond memory. Hacking through closing rounds of 71-77, he finished in a tie for 38th. Dominance rating: +0.48.
