Masters of the Majors for the 2020 Season
By Bill Felber
8 Tony Finau, -0.72
Finau hasn’t won since 2016, but he did take home close to $3 million during the 2019-20 season, and he’s off to a $595,000 start this season. His performance in the three Majors has played a big part in building those numbers.
He made a serious run at Morikawa before settling for a tie for fourth, three strokes off the winning pace, at Harding Park. Just one stroke behind Moriawa and Paul Casey through three rounds, he produced a strong 66 but found himself unable to keep up with Morikawa’s torching four-under 31 Sunday back nine. Dominance rating: -1.71.
At Winged Foot, Finau lost touch with DeChambeau due to matching Friday-Saturday 73s. He still managed a total of 286 that tied him with Zach Johnson, Webb Simpson and Justin Thomas for eighth place. Dominance rating: -0.93.
Coming in to the Masters off a tie for 24th at Houston, Finau looked like a plausible dark horse. A promising first round 69 came to naught when Finau followed with 75-71-72. That brought him home an inglorious tie for 38th with, among others, Tiger Woods. Dominance rating: +0.48.
The lackluster Masters performance somewhat undermined an otherwise decent Majors season for Finau, one that had him in contention once.
