Justin Rose appeared to be in a good spot to make the cut at the RSM Classic on Friday. Then came a finish that crushed his hopes.

Justin Rose had a tough finish on Friday at the RSM Classic on the PGA Tour. It’s one that definitely has him wishing he could take a mulligan.

Rose shot 70 on Thursday to finish at 2-under par and to place himself in good position to play the weekend. All he would need to do on Friday was to shoot something under par. That would have been good enough to get him inside the cut line.

In Friday’s round, Rose had a pretty quiet front nine, with one notable exception. He parred eight of the nine holes on the front side, which didn’t get him where he wanted, and needed, to go. But the one exception put him further away from getting inside the cut line.

That came on the par-4 sixth hole. There, Rose drove his ball into the native area and was forced to take a penalty. His third shot got him into the rough, with just over 110 yards left to the green.

Rose hit the green with his fourth shot and had about 10 feet left to save his bogey. But he missed the putt and settled for a double bogey. That, combined with the eight pars, left him with a 2-over par 37 on the front nine.

That meant Rose would need to rally on the back nine. And he eventually did.

But first, Rose went on another par streak. This time, he parred 10, 11, 12, 13 and 14 to start his back nine. That kept him at 2-over par and his hopes of playing the weekend seemed to be going away.

However, Rose would then rally. He birdied the par-5 15th hole to get back to 1-over. He then birdied the par-4 16th hole to get back to even par on his round and 2-under for the event.

Rose would then birdie the par-3 17th hole after sticking his tee shot about six feet from the hole. The birdie got him to 1-under on the day and 3-under for the tournament. The cut line was right at that number, 3-under par, as Rose played the final hole. A par would get him to the weekend.

On the par-4 18th hole, Rose drove his ball into the fairway and had 187 yards left for his second shot. But his iron shot came up short and dropped into a greenside bunker.

Rose’s third shot, from the bunker, was not his best and left him with about 17 feet for his par. It was literally make the putt and play the weekend or miss and go home.

Unfortunately for Rose, he missed, suffering a crushing bogey and leaving him outside the cut line.

For Rose, who is ranked 28th in the world, this is a very disappointing finish. This is an event where he should be competing to win rather than competing to make the cut. Simply put, Rose needs to do better than he did this week, and especially on Friday, in an event like this.
