2020 Mayakoba Golf Classic: Top 10 power rankings at El Camaleon
Abraham Ancer winning this week would make for one of the better storylines at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. Many thought he would be the first Mexican (Ancer is a dual American-Mexican citizen) to win on the PGA Tour in 42 years.
Instead, it was former phenom Carlos Ortiz breaking through to win the Houston Open a few weeks ago.
Ancer can take the torch this week as one of the legitimate tournament favorites. The 29 year old has done just about everything but win. In five years on the PGA Tour, Ancer has five runner-ups and 23 top-10s.
Here in 2020 he was second twice. Once was at The American Express and the other at the Heritage. Ancer also took solo fourth at the Shriners Open this fall as part of a current streak of six top-40s in his last seven starts. His last start netted T-13th at the Masters. That was his best career major finish.
The former Oklahoma Sooner has played well at the Mayakoba Golf Classic. He missed the cut in 2015 and settled for T-55th in 2016 but has been on a tear ever since: T-9th (71-69-65-68), T-21st (65-68-67-71) and T-8th (66-72-65-67).
“I feel like I really like this place,” Ancer was transcribed by Tee Scripts in 2019. “This is my fourth or fifth time playing it, a golf course that I love. Obviously I want to perform in front of my people, but I truly, this is just exciting more than just nerves.”
El Camaleon is the perfect venue for a short but accurate hitter like Abe. Standing at 5 feet, 7 inches, Ancer puts it out there just 293.4 yards per drive (171st). He’s 25th in fairway accuracy (69.93%).
Playing from the fairway is key at this event. Ancer is top-50 in strokes gained approach and putting, so he’s got the tools to beat a good field here and win.
